Bench blocks and bench pins though have the similar names, are totally different tools for making jewelry. One is for hammering and the other is for keeping the jewelry stable. The two can be got from jewelry supplies company and crafts stores.
Bench block is actually a piece of steel which has smooth surface. And this surface is used to hammer wire or other jewelry parts on.
Then how do we use the tools for making jewelry? Place wire on top of the bench block and hold it in place while hammering. In order to avoid your bench block moving when you are working, you had better place it on a mat which has the rubber surface.
Bench pin is a piece of solid wood which is specially shaped. At the bottom, it get a V shaped notch,while at the upper side, a rectangle board protrudes.
How should jewelry makers use this kind of tools for making jewelry? When making jewelry, makers attach it to their benches. They use it to support pieces of metal when cutting and processing. And you can also use them to stabilize the coil when making jump rings with saw.
The introduction about the two kinds of tools for making jewelry might help a lot when one day you have the chance to use them. And once you master the skills of using them, you must think that they are great tools for making jewelry.
